Geography
Benin is a country located in West Africa. It is bordered to the east by Nigeria, to the west by Togo, to the northwest by Burkina Faso, to the northeast by Niger and to the south by the Atlantic Ocean. Its capital is the city of Porto Novo, but government buildings and commercial activities are concentrated in Cotonou, which is in fact the country's showcase. Benin covers an area of 114,763 km2 with a population of 11,496,140 inhabitants.
Culture
Characterized by a mosaic of cultures, the country nevertheless has large ethnic groups, such as the Fons, Adja, Yoruba, Batomnus, Batanmamba and Peul. The vodoun religion is still widely practiced, even though Christianity and Islam also have an influence in Benin.
Before Colonisation
Before colonisation, the country was made up of kingdoms of various highly structured and brilliant ethnic groups, including the kingdoms of Dahomey, Porto Novo, Allada, Nikki and Kouande. Conversely, the peoples of L'Atacora were grouped into independent hierarchical chiefdoms that lived in harmony.
Today
In 1882, after 64 years of resistance (1807-1882), the French defeated the kings in Benin and established colonial rule. Benin only gained its independence in 1960. Since then, the country experienced several political regimes until February 1990 when it began its democratic process following the conference of the living forces of the nation.
